Students playing on playground

Our students at JFK and Madill Elementary celebrated Global School Play Day!

Play is so important - for everyone - but especially for children.

“At JFK, we are always excited to celebrate the important role of play in learning each year on Global School Play Day,” JFK Elementary Principal Christina Frank says. “The only rule on Global School Play Day is to not use electronics, making room for more - and better - interactions among students, teachers, and families. Our students brought everything from dolls to board games to blankets for fort building to a putting green, sharing connections through play with their friends and teachers all day long!”

Madill Elementary Principal Amy DiSalvo says, for students in early grade levels, play is learning.

“For these kids, playing offers different layers of learning,” she says. “There are rules to learn, whether it’s a board game, or dolls, or drawing, making bracelets together - anything, really - playing helps minds develop and it helps kids understand the world around them.”

DiSalvo says this kind of unstructured play time helps kids learn about themselves, too.

“They make choices,” DiSalvo says. “By choosing what to play and who to play with, our students are figuring out what they like, what they’re good at, and who they are. It’s so important for these kids and their teachers. And it’s really fun. It’s nice - it’s rewarding - to be able to give everyone in our schools a little time just to play.”
