On October 2, Ogdensburg Free Academy hosted the official launch of The Ogdensburg Promise, a transformational initiative designed to remove financial barriers to higher education, career training and workforce development for eligible City of Ogdensburg residents. The event brought together students, school leaders, higher education partners, elected officials, donors and community advocates to celebrate a shared commitment to investing in the future of Ogdensburg’s young people.

For many students in attendance, the announcement represented more than a scholarship opportunity. It offered a clear pathway to achieving their goals after graduation, whether through college, technical training or career certification programs. Beginning with the OFA Class of 2027, eligible students will have access to last-dollar financial support that helps cover remaining tuition and mandatory fees after federal, state and institutional aid has been applied.

The program provides three distinct pathways for students:

  • Two-year degree programs at SUNY Canton
  • Four-year degree opportunities through SUNY Canton, SUNY Potsdam, Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University
  • Trade and technical certification programs through approved vocational and career training providers

In addition to financial assistance, students will benefit from one of the program’s most innovative features: personalized guidance from dedicated Promise and Workforce Pathway Coaches. These professionals will help students navigate college and financial aid applications, explore career interests, connect with internships and identify employment opportunities throughout the North Country.

The initiative has already generated excitement among families who now see a more affordable and attainable path to education after high school. The partnership between local organizations, higher education institutions, businesses and community leaders demonstrates a collective commitment to helping students succeed while strengthening the local workforce.

School leaders are particularly encouraged by the long-term impact the program may have on student aspirations and achievement. By reducing concerns about affordability and providing individualized support throughout the process, The Ogdensburg Promise is expected to encourage more students to pursue postsecondary education and career training opportunities with confidence.

As the first eligible cohort, members of the Class of 2027 will begin working with program representatives to learn more about scholarship requirements, financial aid processes and the range of educational pathways available to them. Current students in grades 9 through 12 who reside within the City of Ogdensburg will also have opportunities to explore how the program can support their future goals.

The launch of The Ogdensburg Promise represents the beginning of a new chapter for the City of Ogdensburg. By connecting students to education, training and career opportunities, the initiative not only supports individual success but also helps build a stronger workforce and a brighter future for the entire community.
