Timeline & Logistics
When will the reorganization take place?
The transition begins for the 2026–27 school year. Detailed logistics (bus routes, schedules, staffing assignments) will be finalized this spring.
When will families and staff know their building assignments?
The district expects to share assignments by the second week of March.
Is this decision final?
Yes. The restructuring will move forward.
Transportation
Will transportation be provided for all students?
Yes. The district confirmed transportation will be available, including for UPK students.
When can families sign up for bus routes?
Bus list development will begin around spring break, and communication will be sent to families.
How will transportation work for families with children in both buildings?
A single bus will transport siblings together; families will not need to manage separate buses.
Will school start times change?
Possibly. The district is exploring staggered start times and may open buildings as early as 7:00 a.m.
Will after‑school programs change or have different rates?
No. Rates will remain consistent, and transportation to the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club will continue to be provided.
Classrooms, Staffing & Student Experience
How will class sizes be affected?
Class sizes will be more balanced across the district, with generally 16-20 students per class. In line with enrollment trends, class sizes are smaller in lower grades.
Will teachers need to travel between buildings?
The district currently has staff that travels between district buildings. Very few additional staff members will need to travel.
How will the district support students through the transition?
A Steering Committee is actively planning support to make the transition as smooth as possible for both students and staff.
Facilities & Long-Term Planning
How much of Madill will be used once it becomes a primary school?
For the 2026-27 school year, all but one classroom at Madill is expected to be in use.
Could Madill eventually close?
If enrollment drops to the projected 912 students by 2033, Madill would likely need to close in the future. Current projections do not account for unexpected enrollment declines.
How many students are currently in each building?
- JFK: 431 students
- Madill: 360 students
Programs, Services & Events
Will concerts, parent‑teacher conferences, and family events still be held across buildings?
Yes. The district will ensure events remain accessible and family‑friendly.
Will lunch service improve?
Yes. Younger students (UPK–1) take longer to eat and order. Separating age groups will improve cafeteria flow and allow for more developmentally appropriate menus.
Budget & Governance
Why is this reorganization necessary?
Without restructuring, maintaining current programming would require a 20% tax increase. The reorganization will save the district $1.5 million and avoid layoffs.
Who decides on school district mergers or closures?
Local school boards make those decisions. NYSED does not force mergers. District boards independently decide whether to merge or close.
